media update: July

A sparse media update due to family members visiting, spending time with Momo, birthday celebrations, and starting Yakuza 4.

Asterisks denote something I particularly enjoyed or found especially worthy of my time; double asterisks are reserved for the creme de la creme.  As always, your mileage may vary.

FICTION

1. False Witness by Karin Slaughter:  Leigh is a defense attorney who reluctantly takes on a case that could blow her past wide open.  (Content warning:  graphic descriptions of brutal sexual assaults)

2. Fallen by Linda Castillo:  Police chief Kate Burkholder is shocked when a murder victim turns out to be someone she used to know.

3. 56 Days* by Catherine Ryan Howard:  During the height of the pandemic, Ciara and Oliver decide to move in together even though they've only been on a couple of dates and neither one is sure they can trust the other just yet.  It turns out one of them is right to be wary in this engrossing and timely thriller.

MOVIES

1. Nobody*:  After going off on a group of thugs on the bus, Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) finds himself in the crosshairs of an angry Russian mobster in this brutal but highly entertaining action flick.

2. The Tomorrow War*:  A group of time traveling soldiers tries to stop aliens from destroying humanity in the future.  I wasn't expecting much from this, but it was fun!

3. Gunpowder Milkshake:  An assassin (Karen Gillan) finds herself caring for a young girl while trying to avoid other paid killers on her trail.  Stylish, but something never really clicked for me.

4. Minari:  A Korean-American family tries to make farm life work for them.
